Review: Namaste Foods

During a recent festival near where I live, I had a chance to try the results of some baking mixes from Namaste Foods, which specializes in foods free of gluten, wheat, potato, soy, corn, dairy, tree nuts, peanuts, and casein. I'm still trying to figure out what that leaves.

I didn't do the baking, but did get to try the results of the brownie and spice cake mixes and was duly impressed. Whatever they left out, what remained was tasty. If you've got any kind of food allergy, or entertain those who do, this is a great resource. They also have muffin, waffle, and pancake mixes, pasta meals, and bread and pizza crust mixes.

However, cheap it isn't. For example, a bread mix for one loaf is $5.29. Retail price for a single chocolate cake mix yielding 2 9-inch lawyers is $5.79. Add $6.95 shipping for orders under $30, and that's one expensive bag of ingredients - and you still add oil, water, and eggs.

It's good to know that the resource is available; it's just a shame that the prices are high enough to keep you from using it casually.

I too have been wowed by Namaste's products- it took a while to weed through the not-so-yummy gluten and other -free products out there before I hit on one that is uniformly tasty and easy to make. Since then, however, my whole family- even the younger, pickier ones- have been completely hooked! They prefer the pasta mixes (Say Cheez and Pasta Pisavera are just as good, in fact better, than your classic kid's fave 'Mac'n Cheese', and there's many a day that it shows up on the table for a quick lunch. But as for me, I go for the yummy comfort food: Brownies, Spice Cake (it has a Carrot Cake option right there in the package too), and my all-time favorite Chocolate Cake.
One thing I'd like to point out: yeah, at first glance their product seems a bit spendier than a lot of the baking mixes out there, but if you look at the yield, it's really quite reasonable, even cheaper than most. And what's the saying... "you get what you pay for?" I personally would rather pay a buck or two more for great food than save a bit and buy cardboard tasting crud. A mistake I made all too often when I was first diagnosed with Celiac Disease!
Anyway, I'm glad I found your blog; I'm constantly scouring the internet for recipes, reviews and new ideas for feeding my family. Healthily, safely and great-tasting.
Oh, one last thing- I checked out Namaste's website, and you might be surprised as to what you find: they have all sorts of good stuff on there, like recipes, FAQ's (something which helped me LOADS when I was having problems with my baking at high altitude) and if you need to call their 1-800#, the lady I spoke to was super helpful, she even sent me a free mix when I explained how I messed up once with my brownies. She also read off a list of stores within a 30 mile radius of my house, which saved me the hassle of that shipping cost.
Just a thought! Hope you continue to blog, we GF folks gotta stick together and learn from each other.
God bless,
Kendra
