Uncomplimentary Restaurant Review Costs Irish News £25,000

An uncomplimentary restaurant review is costing the Irish News of Belfast £25,000 ($48,706.96 in US dollars on Feb. 9, 2007, according to this converter) plus court costs, according to this BBC News story. Owners of Goodfellas, the west Belfast establishment that was the focus of a 2000 review, decided not to get mad, but to get even. They went to court and sued for defamation and the jury unanimously agreed, even though the paper argued that it was a justified article. Talk about a legal whacking. That probably makes this one of the most expensive restaurant meals in history, or at least for restaurants not in Manhattan.
Comments:
A lip smacking good article, Erik.

But I'm afraid to say, "Too bad the food wasn't" out of fear they might sue.

I guess they don't subscribe to the concept freedom of the press -- or maybe they just equate a lousy review with libel.
