How Bad Publishers Are at Managing Royalties and Rights

I'm a fairly cynical guy when it comes to trusting what publishers do, but Art Hutchinson, a strategic planning consultant and owner of the Mapping Strategy business blog, managed to surprise me. He had posted an interesting take on a New York Times article about publishers not having a clue as to why some books sell better than others. I responded in a comment and his answer is a must read for book authors, or those who wish to be.
